“You look like hell. Rough night?” Hank moved some paperwork from off the passenger seat as Sebastien clambered into the Tahoe.

“I’m fine. Those ribs I ate attacked me in the middle of the night, gave me horrible heartburn.”

“We have to make a stop first. I called the guy from Game, Fish, and Parks. He’s apoplectic about one of the mountain lions they’re tracking. It will take a bit for Search and Rescue to get set up anyway. We may as well miss that drudgery.” Hank considered telling his brother about the mountain lion from last night but decided it could wait.

“What about Tiffany? Is she coming?”

“She would eat you alive, bro.” Hank smiled impishly and rubbed Sebastien’s hair like his brother was a five-year-old.

“Oh, shut up! That’s not what I mean.”

Hank was still smiling. “She’ll be there later. She’s at the autopsy of the guy from last night.”

Hank’s smile quickly faded into a concerned frown as he regarded his brother’s drawn and weary profile. “You sure you’re up for this? I can take you back to the hotel and pick you up later.”

“Honestly, I’m fine.”

“Okay. Oh, by the way, I hope you haven’t eaten yet. We’re having breakfast with the mountain lion dude.”

Sebastien answered with a grimace.

As the brothers entered the café, they nearly collided with a couple of bikers who were walking out. Besides nearly impaling him with the door handle, the men looked to Hank to be trouble. They were definitely not local, nor did they resemble the monied wanna-be bikers that invaded the hills from the nation’s suburbs on their forty-thousand-dollar Harley’s each August. The camera of Hank’s mind snapped a couple of photos, just in case, as he and Sebastien slid by.

Barry Van Lowe stood up at the booth farthest from the door and waved the men over. “Sergeant LeGris. Thanks for agreeing to meet with me.”

“Absolutely. We always have time for our colleagues at GFP. This is Dr. Sebastien Grey, our forensic anthropologist. He also happens to be an expert on…uh…” Hank struggled to find an apt description for something he barely understood himself. He looked at his brother for help.

“Big cat predation on primates, you could say,” offered Sebastien, who then offered his hand to the state biologist.

“Hmm, interesting. Much call for that kind of thing, is there?” Barry’s face betrayed genuine interest rather than sarcasm.

“Well, no. My dissertation work specifically involved cheetah predation on primates in Namibia.”

“By primates you mean humans?”

“No, no. Not at all. Mostly baboons; sometimes vervet monkeys.”

“That’s actually fascinating. Is it important that the sheriff’s office have an expert in big cat predation? Are you aware of some problem about which the GFP should be aware?”

Uh-oh, thought Hank. He had driven himself down into a cul-de-sac and was about to be jumped. “Nope. I just figured it would be important that we have someone who knows a bit about cat behavior. That’s why I brought Sebast—er, Dr. Grey along. I’m just a dumb cop. I’ll need him to translate for me.
